Brownwich and Chilling Reprieved
Following enormous public pressure, Hampshire County Council has dropped proposals to extract gravel at Brownwich and Chilling. The decision came after the County Council received about two thousand responses from local people to their consultation.
It is a great relief that this campaign has been successful. Local residents should take the credit for making sure that their voice was heard loud and clear by the County Council and I am grateful to them for the commitment to this campaign and to the County Council for listening to their views.
Now that the immediate threat to Brownwich and Chilling has been lifted, I am looking at what can be done to safeguard its long term future. The County Council bought this land to protect it from development and I want to see if it can be given long term statutory protection. I also believe that in future when looking at gravel extraction, more consideration should be given to the environmental impact that it might have on an area.
